Abstract:
Objective: To investigate the effect of preoperative ONS (oral nutritional supplements) on the postoperative nutritional status and clinical outcomes for the patients with digestive tract malignancies. Methods: A total of 254 surgical patients with digestive tract malignancies in Nanshan Hospital of Shenzhen from September 2013 to June 2018 were analyzed retrospectively, including preoperative ONS group (n = 97) and the non-ONS group (n = 157). Propensity score matching (PSM) was applied by SPSS software to obtain samples of covariate equilibrium between the two groups. Results: A total of 97 pairs were successfully matched. The postoperative hospital stays in the ONS group and the non-ONS group were 14.8 days and 17.2 days, respectively (P < 0.05). The weight loss in the patients of the two group between admission and discharge was 1.2 kg and 2.0 kg, respectively (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Preoperative ONS is a beneficial nutritional support to shorten the postoperative hospital stay and reduce weight loss in the patients with digestive tract malignancies.
